power in nature: 30 x 30 CA
About us
Power in Nature is a community-driven initiative to protect 30% of California’s lands and coastal waters by 2030.
What is 30x30?
Scientists worldwide agree that in order to stem the worst impacts of climate change, we must globally protect 30% of land and coastal waters by 2030. More than 190 countries have signed on to the worldwide 30×30 initiative.
Opportunity of a lifetime
California was the first U.S. state to commit to 30×30 via Governor Newsom’s Executive Order in 2020, now formally codified into state law in October 2023. California’s biodiversity is unique. Reaching 30×30 is our chance to protect our beloved natural and wild spaces, address climate change, and advance equity for future generations.

Power in Nature is Making 30x30 a Reality in California
Power in Nature is a statewide coalition of over 500 community groups, environmental and conservation organizations, land trusts, indigenous organizations and tribal members dedicated to advancing California’s 30×30 commitment to protect 30% of its land and coastal waters by 2030.
Pathways to 30x30
Power in Nature supports the six pillars identified by the California Natural Resources Agency’s Pathways to 30×30. In addition, Power in Nature is focused on increasing tribal engagement and advancing equity.
tribal Engagement
Together, we can ensure 30×30 addresses the legacies of the violent displacement of tribes from their traditional homelands. California must create a process to return lands – and management of those lands – to indigenous communities, and must financially support tribes for their consultation on and stewardship of 30×30 protections. California has a goal to expand tribal stewardship for at least 7.5 million acres, illustrating how important it is that we prioritize tribal stewardship in our 30×30 progress.
Power in Nature Through Equity
30×30 is an opportunity to address legacies of discriminatory land use policies, pollution burdens, and other climate and environmental injustices that have excluded low-income households, tribes, and communities of color from access to nature, and from decision-making around public resources. We advocate for land and water conservation that fosters equity and helps address historic and systemic environmental injustice in California.
Leadership Committee
Power in Nature is guided by a Leadership Committee composed of leaders and experts from across the state, many of whom support regional groups and working groups. Learn more about our Leadership Committee members.
