San Joaquin Valley Region
San Joaquin Valley Region
Situated between California’s Central Coast and the Sierra Nevada, the San Joaquin Valley region spans eight California counties. Once covered by vast wetlands, Valley Oak savannahs, and desert shrublands, it is now the most productive agricultural region in the U.S. But that has come with an environmental cost to nature and human health. Now the area faces the necessary retirement of up to a million acres of farmland, with the opportunity to restore the land, support wildlife and bring justice to the peoples of the Valley.
While over 26% of California’s lands qualify as conserved under 30×30, only just over 7% of the San Joaquin Valley does, and of those lands, only a bit over a third have open public access. We have a lot of catching up to do to provide our residents with reasonable access to the outdoors, provide Tribal restitution, and to support nature. That is why efforts in our area are vitally important.
While much of the natural San Joaquin Valley has been altered by humans, there are still places where special places persist- Riparian Forest, California Prairie, Valley Oak Savannah, Tule Marsh, Vernal Pools and San Joaquin Salt Brush. These places host numerous at risk species, including San Joaquin Kit Fox, Tipton Kangaroo Rat, Buena Vista Lake Shrew, Giant Garter Snake, Western Spadefoot Toad, and Striped Adobe Lily. It is our goal to preserve what is left and restore as much as we can.
